Knights move to 2-0 on Sullivan gem
That was what Danny Sullivan's fastball was Sunday.
Sullivan threw a two hitter at the DeForest Deacons in a complete game effort and his teammates responded with three runs which held up in the 3-0 win. The Dodgeville Knights are now 2-0 and have a game Sunday at Cross Plains that will either decide it all or force the Home Talent League's post season play-offs into extra weeks.
DeForest managed a single in the first inning that loaded the bases after an error and a walk but Sullivan issued a strikeout to get out of the jam.
They also had a single in the fifth but the baserunner was erased trying to steal on a neat double play. Second baseman Ty Marklein fielded a grounder at the bag, stepped on it while the runner was sliding into him and rifled the throw to first to complete the twin killing.
The Deacons tried to sneak in a run in the third when Matt Kabele tagged up at third and tested Knights right fielder Mark Ludwig's arm. Ludwig fired a strike to catcher Aaron Ayers after catching a fly ball and got Kabele trying to slide in for a run.
The next batter, Andrew Handorf, lined out to center field to end the inning.
Kabele got to third again in the sixth but could not score.
Sullivan retired 11 straight batters after the Kabele was hit by a pitch to start the sixth. He hit Julian Edwards with two outs in the ninth then got the last out on a strikeout.
Sullivan fanned eight and walked two while hitting two batters.
The Knights scored two runs in the first. Karl Reynolds got to first on a slow roller to lead off the game and was bunted to second by Marklein who reached first on a throwing error. A passed ball moved both runners before Sullivan singled in Reynolds. Marklein was retired on a throw to the plate on a infield grounder but Gary James, who had walked, scored on a sac fly by Eric Rohowetz.
The Knights got their third run in the second. Aaron Ayers singled, advanced when the ball got past the right fielder and scored on Marklein's single.
Reynolds was 3x4, Marklein 2x3, Sullivan 2x4 and Tanner Solberg 2-4. Travis Elvert and Ayers each had one hit.
In the other game in the round robin championship series, Cross Plains eliminated Albion from title contention 4-0 behind Kodey Simon's shutout. Simon pitches at Division 2 Winona State.
Dodgeville is 2-0, Cross Plains and DeForest 1-1 and Albion 0-2.
