Hobart Tredinnick's maternal grandmother Laura V. Stoner Avenell was the daughter of Civil War soldier John Stoner. He was born in 1837 Pennsylvania and married Ann Peregrine in 1858. They lived at Linden and Mifflin. He was both a miner and a farmer. John enlisted Sep.16 1861 with the 11th Wis Inf. Company E. The history of their service includes the Battle of Vicksburg. Stories passed down in Hobart's family include that John Stoner was a skilled harness maker and horse handler and he served in that capacity often while in service. It was said that he served in a battle that included Ulysses S. Grant. A comical story told was that his grandmother, Laura was born in September of 1866, exactly 9 months after her Father's return from the war. John died December 18, 1912. His brother Parsley served in the same unit.
Another of Hobert's great grandfather William Brewer was born in Cornwall. He married Jane Pitts on Apr 17, 1859. The family lived in Linden. William enlisted in WI Inf 30th Co. B. on August 21, 1862 and served until September 20, 1865. William died December 17, 1898.
Hobart's great-great uncle also served in the Civil War in WI Inf 12th Co. C. John Reynolds Pitts was the brother-in-law of William Brewer. According to John's obituary, he was wounded in battle near Atlanta. John served as the postmaster at Linden for awhile. He was born in 1842 England to Gilbert and MaryAnn (Reynolds) Pitts and emigrated with them in 1846 to Iowa County, Wisconsin. By 1885 he had moved to Cherokee County, Iowa and ran a threshing machine outfit. He died August 22, 1924.
