Along The Ad Routes

Barneveld always has a great "Fair Day" parade. That event takes the place of them having a homecoming celebration as they co-op with Mount Horeb for football and the football game is traditionally the homecoming game. the entire school puts together either individual class floats or a marching group that performs some type of routine. They have a court and a king and queen. Oh, there are a lot more photos on our website www.thedodgevillechronicle.com - then go to photos!

I really can't believe that Jose Reyes (New York Mets baseball team) took himself out of the final game of the season because he bunted for a base hit his first time up and that would mean that Ryan Braun (Milwaukee Brewers) had to go 3x3 or 3x4 in his final game that evening to win the batting crown. That just shows what ego some highly paid sport figures have. It also takes me back to when another Brewer - Paul Molitor - who ran into pretty much that same thing. George Brett, Kansas City Royals, sat our his final game (I think in 1976) so Molitor needed to go 4x5 in his final game to win the crown. Then there was a fellow named Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox who won six batting titles spanning from 1941 to 1958 and he took time off for WWII. 70 years ago to the day that Jose Reyes bunted for a hit and then took himself out of the game Williams was batting .400 (an unheard of figure) on the final day and the Sox were playing a doubleheader. Williams' manager told him he could sit out the two games to assure him of the .400 magic figure. Williams replied "Like he__ I will. I'm a baseball player and I'm playing." He went on that day to go 4x4 in the first game and 2x4 in the second for a 6x8 day and raised his average to .406. Now that's a true baseball player!

Oh, and Ted Williams was at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed by the Japanese as was an uncle of mine. The two were safe during the bombing and became very close. My uncle - John - was invited to a lot of banquets and get togethers that Williams was featured at over the later years.!

Sunday I attended a triple birthday party for my nephew Ryan (Reilly), his son Sean and Sean's cousin Brayden (Boley). There was quite a house full especially when you get the Reillys, Nondorfs, Boleys and some friends all at one place. Thanks to Jason and Jackie Boley for being the hosts with a lot of good food and we all got to watch some good football.

It was quite a day Saturday with the Brewers winning game one of the National League Division Series and then The UW Badgers annihilating Nebraska in the Cornhuskers first game as a Big 10 member. The two were ranked 7 (Badgers) and 8 (Nebraska) going in. It was a shaky start for the UW, but when they got it going they really got it going to the tune of 48-17. The Badgers are now ranked #4 in the polls - that's pretty high!

Then, on Sunday, the Green Bay Packers stayed undefeated for the 2011-12 season as did the Brewers for the playoffs!

This Saturday is Highland's homecoming football game and celebration. There are a lot of class get togethers that day and a lot of fun for anyone who attends their events - parade, game, dance, etc.

I took some ribbing from some of the 2011 Dodgeville Athletic Hall of Fame inductees, especially one Michelle Price Heim, for my mistakes in the first week's introduction of the inductees in the paper. Leave it to Michelle to point a jab in my direction. That event, too, has a lot of photos on our website. Check them out!
