Records fall, Dodge-Point teams win

Friday the 13th didn't seem to bother the Dodgeville-Mineral Point track and field teams as both the girls and boys brought back championships from the Steve "Sparky" Reynolds Memorial Invitational held at Boscobel.
Also, three meet records were broken by Dodge-Point runners - ironically all three belonged to past Dodge-Point runners.
The girls scored 85 points to top Boscobel's 75.5.
The rest of the team scores were: Fennimore 68.7, Cashton 65, Belmont 64, Darlington 63, Lancaster 52.2, Richland Center 41, Southwestern 37, Hillsboro 3, Prairie du Chien 30, Cassville 18.5, Cuba City 15.5, River Ridge 13.7, Ithaca 12, North Crawford 11.2, Kickapoo/La Farge 6.5, Riverdale 6, Platteville 1.
Abby Philipps topped teammate Shelby Owens in the 3200 and in doing so bettered the meet mark set by Dodge-Point and UW-Platteville standout Alli Tank (11:36.06) in 2007. Philipps was timed in 11:30.06 with Owens coming in at 12:04.8.
Mairin Cahill and Owens went 1-2 in the 1600 with times of 5:16.74 and 5:37.96. Caitlin Bauer finished 13th in 6:20.72.

The boys totaled 86.5 points to top the battle for second between Fennimore (73) and Darlington (72).

The 3200 record actually fell twice as both Dodge-Point's Trevor Wunnicke (9:51.11) and Darlington's Tyson Miehe (9:52.84) broke the former mark set in 2007 by Dodge-Point's Landon Balk (9:53.13). Dodge-Point's Brett Hottmann was 3rd in 10:12.99.
The other former Dodge-Point mark that was broken was the 4x800 relay record of 8:17.98 set in 2008. That team was comprised of Bobby Wunnicke, Tom Butusov, Kyle Van Dyne Hoven and Joel Hamilton. The new mark came from Wunnicke, Hottmann, Josef Frank and Mark Schmitz at 8:16.31.
Joseph Lawinger won the 800 in 2:04.31, topping Schmitz at 2:05.25. Cory Fitzsimmons finished 29th in 2:22.65.
The 4x200 team of TC Smith, Shane Kieffer, Payton Hanson and Schmitz won in 1:33.67.

"Once again, we are a bit lucky with the weather cooperating just enough. Although it was cool and wet, the wind stay in check and that is a key factor to good performances in this sport," said Dodge-Point coach oe Hanson.
"We got off to a great start when our Girls and Boys 4 x 800M relays both won in times that put them high on the Division 2 Honor Roll. It looks as though both of them are setting themselves up for a chance to get to La Crosse and the State Championships. I remember that 2008 team and those kids, that was a record I thought would last for some time. I guess you could say I was pleasantly surprised. Unlike the Boys race, where they did received some competition from Darlington, our Girls ran away with the event, winning by a huge margin "
"The biggest surprise of the meet was when they announced that the Dodge-Point Boys and Girls both won the Championship! I talked with our coaches and some have been around for a long time and no one can remember something like this happening to the Track and Field programs. We were just happy for the kids, who work hard and deserve these results. Now we need to focus on the conference championships and the WIAA regional meet."
