Eagles turn back Orioles behind Kitelinger's 15 ks
The Orioles came close Monday but they were not good enough to give the Golden Eagles the first blemish on their record this season. Barneveld, behind the 15 strikeout pitching of Jeremy Kitelinger, derailed the Orioles 5-2 in a Six Rivers East match-up.
Kitelinger, who spaced four hits and walked five, gave up solo runs in the second and fourth. The rest of the way it was dominance.
The win was a little more impressive as the Eagles played without two starters and four players who see action. They were gone for a VICA trip.
"We had some new faces in the line-up and they performed their roles well," said Eagles coach Lance Schmitz.
One of those new faces was Tyler Hellenbrand who took over third base for the day and turned in a 2x2 performance at the plate. He was on base all three times he went to the plate.
Brad Zander was also a hitting leader for the Eagles as he went 2x4 off Orioles hurler Nate Thomas. Thomas fanned five and walked three while giving up four earned runs.
The Orioles took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the second. Cole Jordan walked and got to second. Chris Severson drove in Jordan with an infield single as Jordan never slowed down after leaving second base.
The Eagles went up 2-1 in the fourth. Carson Carmody dropped down a bunt and beat it out. Zander doubled to put runners at second and third. Travis Fenton then tied the game with a sacrifice fly and Beau Thompson sent in a run on an infield out.
The Orioles tied it when Jordan walked then took second when Kitelinger hit a batter before Severson came through again with a single up the middle.
The Eagles took control in the fifth. Hellenbrand singled and Michael Deal came on to run for him. Cody Carmody singled and both runners moved up on a passed ball. With two outs, Argyle elected to intentionally walk Carson Carmody but Zander turned the tables on that plan with a two run double.
The final Eagles run came in the sixth. Kitelinger reached on an error, advanced on a passed ball, took third on a sacrifice by Tyler Owens and scored on Hellenbrand's single.
"Argyle played a great game against us," Schmitz said. "Thomas did a good job pitching in his home park. Their fielders made a couple catches that kept us from scoring more runs."
"Jeremy's 15 strikeouts were the most he's had this season," Schmitz said. "It was a clean game defensively with only one error and two starters gone."
The Eagles are at Black Hawk for a double header today.
