Grand slam decides Pointer battle with Wildcats

It took one swing of the bat to decide a SWAL barnburner and give Southwestern a 9-5 in over Mineral Point in 10 innings Friday.
The swing was compliments of junior shortstop Derek Edmonds who sent a Diamond D-1 NFHS over the fence for a grand slam home run to break a 5-5 deadlock in the bottom of the 10th inning.
Edmonds was no stranger to the home run trot. He hammered three out of the park and sent in eight of the nine Wildcat runs.
That gave pitcher Keaton Kephart all he needed for the decision. He went all 10 frames for the Wildcats, striking out seven and walking seven.
Nick Smith took the loss. He fanned 14 and walked four while spacing seven hits.
The Pointers had five hits off Kephart, one a double by Logan Benish. Smith and Grant Myers both had two hits for the Pointers.
"A great high school baseball game and a tough one to lose," said Mineral Point coach Dan Burreson. "After digging ourselves a hole and falling behind 5-0, we battled back to tie and had opportunities to score the go ahead run, but they made plays and we could not take advantage."
Burreson said Smith did all he could to keep the Pointers close.
"Nick really kept us in the game on the mound and Garrett Bennett made a couple nice plays, but it just was not enough today," Burreson said. "Nick Smith and Grant Myers led us with two hits apiece. Nick and Logan Benish each had a pair of rbi's."
"Tough loss, but there are a lot of games left to play," Burreson added. "It will be interesting to see how we respond."
