Along The Ad Routes

What do you do on Mother's Day and the weather is super fantastic (for a change)? Why you go to a baseball game. There were several mothers and grandmothers at Sunday's Dodgeville Knights vs Blanchardville Bullets Home Talent baseball game. Betty James, wife of former DHS baseball coach Dave James and mother of Knights' centerfielder Gary James, told me last week that she'd see me Sunday. She really can't remember a Mother's Day that she hasn't been at a home talent game. Gary has played for a good many years. With the home talent players' mothers it's pretty much understood that their celebration with their sons will come following the game. Since the first game of the season, Sunday's game was the first that could comfortably be played in shirt sleeves. The photo above shows a meeting on the mound between coach Eric (E-dot) James, infielders (l-r) Tony DeMuth, Travis Elvert, Karl Reynolds and Tyler Marklein and pitcher Jay Lindner. The Dodgeville Knights' mothers went home happy with a 10-6 win!

This Saturday is the annual Uplands Garden Club's annual plant sale inside Ley Pavilion at Harris Park. There are a bunch of Master Gardeners who take part in this sale and boy are the products ever good! Someone asked me if they had some good tulips there. I responded, "I don't know a tulip from a begonia, but I'd stake my life on the fact you'd find some pretty good ones there!

It's really been a struggle getting people to stop for me at the crosswalks in downtown Dodgeville lately. I was having trouble figuring out why, then all of a sudden it came to me. Every time you stop and your vehicle idles, it uses more gas - as it does when you use your brakes - so, with the higher price of gasoline people are trying to save gas by not stopping as often as they have in the past. Does that make ANY sense?

Speaking of the high price of gasoline, it dropped 10 cents per gallon just like i said it would. When oil barrels dropped, I told people that it would drop 10 cents just so it would be below $4.00 a gallon (it's at $3.99.9) and people would feel better. Actually it may drop up to another dime and people would feel even better!

It's definitely graduation time as colleges, tech schools and universities are in the process of losing their "class of 2011". It won't be long and the high schools will be following suit! That also means the spring sports tournaments will be starting. The teams have a lot of make-up games, meets and so forth before that can happen though!

The Hyde Blacksmith Shop has been restored, mainly through efforts by Dodgeville's own Klint McCutchin, and will have an open house this Sunday. if you've never been to Hyde, it's worth a trip - check out the Hyde Mill when you're there - and take a camera!
