WIAA DIVISION 4 SOFTBALL PREVIEWS


HIGHLAND CARDINALS
The Cardinals tied for the championship of the Six Rivers West with Belmont, a team they split with during the regular season and then beat 9-1 in the WIAA Division 4 Sectional semi-finals.
The Cardinals cleared their last hurdle to earn their trip to Goodman Diamond with a 2-1 win over Pepin in the Sectional finals.
The Cardinals enter the tournament with a 21-3 record and were 9-1 in Six Rivers West action. Their three losses were to SWC powers Dodgeville 12-3, Lancaster 14-4 and to Belmont 13-2.
Highland earned their trip to state by beating LaFarge 14-0, Seneca 10-0, DeSoto 12-2, Belmont 9-1 and Pepin 2-1.
The Cardinals swing pretty heavy aluminum as they carry a .415 season batting average. Senior shortstop Emily Rose leads the the team with a .548 average with seven doubles, two triples, three home runs and 39 rbis. She bats third in the line-up.
Seniors Carlee Yanna and Kendall Wienkes both are hitting .508. Wienkes has four home runs and 29 rbis to her credit.
Senior left fielder Morgan Bomkamp is hitting .464, senior catcher Rachel Aide .444, senior designated player Brenna Ramsden .373 and junior third baseman Taylor Wienkes .339.
Junior pitcher Emily Wolfe is 13-3 with a 3.19 era. She has struck out 109 in 93 innings.
Wolfe also carries a .321 batting average.
Freshman right fielder Leigh Drury is hitting .256 and sophomore second baseman Alicia Ramsden .250.
The Cardinals won the Division 4 state title in 2006 and lost in the semifinals in 2008. This is their third appearance at the state tournament.
The Cardinals are coached by Sarah Hennessey who is assisted by Gary Pustina and Rick McMannes.

McDONNELL CENTRAL Macks
The Macks are 20-4 heading into Friday's 9 a.m. semi-final game with Highland. They were 11-3 in the Western Cloverbelt Conference for second place behind Thorp.
Their four losses were to Cochrane-Fountain City, Thorp, Regis and Fall Creek.
The Macks downed Elmwood 9-0, Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran 8-6, Thorp 18-4 and Northwood 8-0.
Their leading arms are junior Sarah Schoch and senior Ali Schufelt and both switch off at first base.
Schoch is 11-4 with 83 strikeouts in 97 innings. Her ERA is 2.17.
Schufelt is 7-0 and struck out 24 in 38 innings. Her ERA is 0.71.
Junior catcher Ellen Mcllquham leads the team in hitting with a .415 average. Senior shortstop Karley Wiensch is hitting .413. Schoch has the most home runs with three.
Team batting average for the Macks is .363.
The Macks are coached by Chelsea Rosenow, a 2009 graduate of Winona State University. She is assisted by Richard Rosenow and David Olson.
The 2008 champion, McDonell Central, makes its third appearance at State. The Macks finished runner-up in Division 3 in their first-ever tournament experience in 2005.

OAKFIELD OAKS
Oakfield dipped down into Six Rivers country and got past Juda 3-0 in the Sectional finals. The game featured a strikeout duel between Juda's Amber Ramos and Oakfield's Ashley Holz.
Holz, a junior lefty, has logged 116 innings this season for the 24-2 Oaks and has struck out 163. Her ERA is 0.05.
Junior second baseman-pitcher Kasey Cook has also done some pitching and is unscored upon in 23 innings. She has fanned 24 in 23 innings.
Holz also leads the offense with a .532 batting average with 11 doubles, two triples and two home runs. She has driven in 47 runs.
Senior catcher Katie Gross is hitting .500 with six home runs and 44 rbis.
Sophomore shortstop Charlotte Pegram carries a .493 average with two homers and 36 rbis.
The Oaks have reached the fences 11 times. Their team batting average is .426.
The Oaks won the Trailways North Conference with a 12-0 record. They lost to Lancaster 2-1 and Horicon 6-2, both non-conference match-ups.
The Oaks like to run. They have stolen 51 bases in 55 attempts. Holz has five of those to lead the team.
Oakfield, is making its ninth appearance overall. The Oaks also won the Division 3 State championship in 1997 and were the Division 4 runners-up in 2004.
The Oaks are coached by Doug Mock, a 1997 UW-Oshkosh grad. He is assisted by Mike Urban, Krista Shafer, Tim Holz and Mike Gross.

TIGERTON TIGERS
Defending champion Tigerton will make its second State appearance after winning the State title in their first appearance last season.
The Tigers finished second in the Central Wisconsin 10 Conference this spring to Rosholt. They earned the privilege to defend their title by routing Athens 16-0 in five innings in the Wausau West Sectional final.
The Tigers were 15-3 in conference play and 23-3 overall. They lost to Rosholt, Almond-Bancroft and Marion.
To get back to state the Tigers beat Bowler 19-0, Marion 8-3, Wausaukee 13-8 and Athens 16-0.
Junior Erin Ortner is 20-3 on the season with 120 innings logged and 233 strikeouts. She allowed only 19 earned runs for a 1.11 ERA.
Junior catcher Emily Ortner is hitting the ball at a .539 clip with five home runs and 35 rbis. She has stolen 31 bases in as many attempts.
The Tigers are a running team with 163 swipes.
Erin Ortner is hitting .493 with two homers and 38 rbis. Taylor Bailey has three homers and 27 rbis while batting .423.
Junior third baseman Fara Sellner and junior shortstop Rachel Robbins are hitting .418 and .413.
The Tigers are hitting .355 with 13 homers and 250 rbis. They have outscored their opponents 271 to 33.
The Tigers are coached by Glenda Smith, a 1981 UW-Stevens Point grad. She is assisted by Kelly Hauser and Candy Cornelius.
