Knights claim CG tourney title


Three wins in a little over 24 hours gave the Dodgeville Knights the championship of the 2011 Cottage Grove Clarence Buss Memorial Tournament.
The Knights started it Friday with a 2-1 win over the host team.
Saturday at 4 p.m. the Knights faced Sun Prairie and came away with a 10-5 win.
They followed with a 4-3 win over Rio in the championship game about half an hour later.
Travis Elvert went six innings and Kyle Nelson one to ice the win over the Firemen. Elvert gave up two hits, fanned five and walked two while giving up an earned run. Nelson gave up two hits before getting the save.
The Knights scored a run in the sixth to tie the Firemen who scored in the fifth. Danny Sullivan singled, advanced on Elvert's bunt, stole third and scored on an error.
The winning run came in the seventh when Eric Rohowetz doubled and scored on an error.
Mark Ludwig turned in a complete game win as the Knights took care of Sun Prairie 10-5 in Saturday's third game. He also went 3x4 with a double and drove in four runs.
Tanner Solberg was 2x4 for the Knights and made a run saving diving catch at the fence. He drove in one run.
Tony DeMuth was 2x3.
Eric Rohowetz singled in a run in the fourth.
Ludwig struck out three and walked five in his complete game effort.
The Knights scored in bunches with four in the third, three in the fourth and three in the fifth.
Greg Brennum pitched five strong innings in the championship game.
Gary James worked one and ended up getting the win.
Danny Sullivan struck out two in closing out the seventh.
Brandon Weier singled in two runs in the fourth. Eric Rohowetz had singled and Tony DeMuth reached on an error to give Weier his shot.
DeMuth and Ludwig both singled in the sixth and moved up on Solberg's sacrifice. Jay Lindner then sent both in with a single.
Brennum fanned two, walked four and gave up one hit along with two runs, one earned.
James fanned one and gave up a hit and an unearned run.
Sullivan fanned two in working a perfect seventh.
