The other day I was crossing the main street in Dodgeville, in a crosswalk, and I intentionally stopped for a vehicle that was approaching the intersection. You see, I noticed the license plate. No, it wasn't one of my IOWA drivers - it was one from New York City. Something told me that I didn't stand a chance of that particular car to stop! And it was going well over the speed limit.

Speaking of out of state vehicles - the price of fuel must not be deterring many people so far this summer (I realize it's not officially summer until the 21st). I have seen license plates from as far away as New Mexico, Arkansas, Missouri, Colorado, Texas and California - not to mention the New York one I talked about earlier!

This Sunday is Father's Day. Pat and I lost our father some 17 years ago, but I still think about him daily. I have a son who calls his father and tries to see him as much as he can (me!). Taking your father fishing, camping. hiking, bicycle ridding or to a ball game or NASCAR event or something along those lines would be a great idea!

The annual Betty Hayes Dance Recital is this Friday and Saturday in Richland Center. I heard that Betty and Lee had their first chance to celebrate their wedding anniversary in over 60 years last weekend as for the first time they didn't have a dance recital scheduled!

The Barneveld baseball team will have played their first game in Division 4 of the state tournament in Appleton by the time this issue of the paper is on the newsstand (Wednesday). I hope I get to go see them play on Thursday (today)!

The Highland softball team won a nail biter last Friday against a very young Pepin team to earn the right to go to state. They play in the D4 semifinals on Friday at Goodman Diamond in Madison. Good luck to them - that senior class has had great success this school year, dating back to a fall (2010) state volleyball championship!

Mineral Point has a big weekend over Father's Day with the Shake Rag Alley Garden Tour and Plane Sale Saturday, the Pendarvis Midsummer Spirits Night on Saturday, the Mineral Point Opera House "Where Music comes From" Saturday night and the Hodan Center's Annual Fly-in, Drive-in Breakfast from 7-11 a.m. on Father's Day Sunday at the Iowa County Airport. Also, there's a fish boil at Hope Lutheran Church in Mineral Point Saturday evening.
