Knights fall short in 3-2 loss to Woodchucks

It was an uphill climb all afternoon and in the end it was a little short of goal.
Platteville scored a run in the top of the 10th inning and made the 3-2 lead stand up and turned back the Dodgeville Knights in a Western Section game Sunday.
Pinch hitter Ryan Weber led off the 10th with a single off reliever Bill Hellmann. After being sacrificed to second, Hellmann coaxed a fly ball for the second out. He appeared to be out of trouble when he coaxed a short fly to second by Jake Green but the ball fell in between three fielders and Weber scored. Travis Knautz doubled to right but Tanner Solberg chased the ball down, threw a strike to Ty Marklein who threw to Brandon Weier for a tag out at the plate.
Reliever Luke Ware threw a three up-three down 10th to preserve the win.
Danny Sullivan went nine for the Knights and struck out 12 in a three hit, one walk effort. He surrendered two runs, one earned.
Both teams put a run on the board in the first. Gary James led off with a walk and took second on sacrifice bunt by Marklein. Sullivan singled him to third and he scored on a fielders choice by Ryan Reilly.
Platteville went up 2-1 in the third but the Knights tied it in the fifth. Marklein doubled to open the inning and advanced on a single by Sullivan. He scored on a dropped fly ball.
Marklein was 2x4 and Sullivan 3x5 for the Knights. Gary James, Aaron Ayers and Mark Ludwig each had one hit. Ludwig and Marklein both doubled.
The Knights host Sauk Prairie Thursday, Sparta Saturday at 2 p.m. and Monroe Sunday.
