Views of Packers Sunday
By J. Patrick Reilly-preilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com
Stopped at Kwik Trip before leaving for a cup of coffee and was told there were only about 50 people stopping in during the game. Everyone seemed to be somewhere watching the game. Nice to be the only one in the store for once.
One of the employees was boxing up some muffins that had been a sale item. I jokingly asked if he planned to eat them all and he said, no, they were going to the nursing homes for the residents...a free service Kwik Trip offers that I bet very few know about. A heartwarming part of the day.
With the trip to Madison, the Packers-Bears game was brought to me by radio. I listened to the ups and downs of the game and could almost see the action.
Reminds me of a statement former President Gerald Ford made once about his favorite pastime of baseball. He said he watched a lot of baseball on the radio.
Things were different then as far as owning television sets but Sunday I knew what he meant.
I "watched" the game that way, too.
The roads took on a holiday like atmosphere during the 45 miles I traveled. Not many cars until the game was over. It felt like Christmas Day all over again.
The Packers made sure of that when they sent Wisconsin's favorite team to Dallas for the Super Bowl. A great gift to the state.
Many of us have had our favorite Packer teams get to the Super Bowl. It is nice the young people who are becoming or have recently become fans now have theirs.
Go Pack!
