Laube, Slaney help Barneveld get coach's 600th
Laube had a 17 point outburst and helped put the game away in the fourth quarter with some cool as ice moments. With the game tied in the fourth quarter Laube scored on a drive after taking a pass from Hailey Cannoy that gave Golden Eagles the lead with a minute left.
The Eagles then got a stop and the Panthers fouled Laube who sank both free throws.
"That pretty much put it away," said Barneveld coach Jim Myers.
McKenzie Sporle helped in the scoring with two free throws early in the period then Laube sealed it further with two more.
The Eagles were six for seven from the line in the fourth quarter.
The win will go down in the record books as number 600 for Myers as he becomes one of the winningest girls basketball coaches in Wisconsin history. That puts him number two on the list of all time wins in the girls records.
The game plan for the Eagles included trying to stop Division 1 recruit Ellen Kiser and limiting the Panthers to one shot. Kiser got loose for 18 points but the Eagles had more than an answer.
That would be freshman Rachel Slaney who led all scorers with 21 points. She and Laube gave the Eagles a much needed inside-outside combination.
There was also help from the bench when fouls became an issue in the second quarter.
"We played a good first half," Myers said. "We got into foul trouble in the second quarter with Sporle, Heidi Chapman and Hailey Cannoy each getting three which forced them to sit a lot. But we had some kids came off the bench and hit some big shots."
Hailey Kleppe had a key three pointer in the quarter and Samantha Evans played well defensively in the post while also coming up with a pair of clutch baskets.
"That helped us keep the lead," Myers said.
He felt Laube and Slaney took over the duties of keeping the Eagles in the game.
"Madi played a solid game for us," Myers said. "She hit a three in the first, two in the second and scored in every quarter."
"Rachel played very well and is a tough match-up for most every team," he added. "She had nine in the first, eight in the second and four in the third. She had to log a lot of minutes because of foul trouble and got a little tired by the fourth when she did not score."
"For us to go in there and win and not have Hailey Cannoy score was huge," Myers said. "The rest of the kids stepped up. Hailey really never could get into any flow due to the fouls but she helped a lot with seven rebounds and that big assist at the end."
The win kept the Eagles undefeated at 3-0 in Six Rivers East play. Juda fell to second at 2-1.
