Eagles overtake Arrows in non-conference tilt
It wasn't so much the loss but rather how the loss came about.
"Last year we didn't come ready to play," coach Jim Myers said about last season's convincing win by the SWC team. "This year we wanted to do what had to get done from the start."
Chalk one up for the Golden Eagles who rolled over the Arrows 49-33.
Barneveld led 18-15 at the end of a hotly contested first quarter but then the defensive pressure took over and allowed the Eagles to coast to a 27-16 lead at the half. They outscored Lancaster 22-17 the second half.
They also got 5-11 Lancaster post Jena Vesperman in foul trouble early and took advantage of her early trip to the bench.
"Our half court defense was pretty good," Myers said. "And the second half we did a good job boxing out for rebounds. We didn't give up the second shot."
Freshman Rachel Slaney came off the bench to take scoring honors with 15 points and senior Hailey Cannoy had 10. Madison Laube ran the point and added eight with a pair of three pointers.
"Madi did a good job running the offense and we got good contributions off the bench from Rachel Slaney and Hailey Kleppe," Myers said. Kleppe had one of Barneveld's five three pointers.
"I was a little surprised they didn't take the ball inside more," Myers said. "But with Vesperman in foul trouble that option might not have been there for them."
Six Rivers East conference play starts this week. The Eagles head to Albany tonight.
