A senseless act of crime
By Todd D. Novak-tnovak@thedodgevillechronicle.com
To me personally, the cemetery holds a special spot, as my sister and my grandparents all the way back to my great-great-great-great grandparents are buried there along with a host of other relatives. Not only am I angry at the damage, but I feel violated. I'm sure every other family who has loved ones at the cemetery feel the same way.
Cemeteries are full of history, architecture styles, and community heritage. They are sanctuaries for the living and, for so many people, that land is sacred. This is why toppled headstones are disturbing and devastating to the cemetery itself, cemetery staff, the families, and the community. The headstones are just not someone's private property, but items of historical value to families and the community.
I can not fathom what would possess anyone to even think about vandalizing a cemetery, let alone following through with the act. Did they enter the cemetery on a dare? Were they looking for a rowdy, adventurous time or just looking to do something just for the heck of it?
The solemn quiet of the cemetery was violated by a disgraceful act and the punishment should be severe. However, no matter what the sentence will be the vandals have scared a community and many families and that can never be taken away.
