A piece of advice

By J. Patrick Reilly-preilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

No doubt graduating seniors have heard a ton of advice already.

The events such as awards night, senior honors, and graduation have been laden with speakers who have urged the graduates to get out there and have a good life.

I would like to add one more piece of advice.

"Don't settle."

Don't settle for less than the degree you want at a college, university or tech school. Work hard for it and expand your mind while doing it. The good thing about now is that it is up to you to get it done. Your parents will not be there waiting for you to come home and urge you to do your homework. What you do with your studies from here on out will be up to you. Don't let yourself down.

Don't settle for less than the profession you want. You may have to change jobs several times to get it but don't let it pass you by. Have your goals, your dreams and do all you can to accomplish them. Previously a person changed jobs eight times (on an average) but with the economic downturn that figure is probably less. Even if you have to hang onto a job just so you have one, keep searching for the career you want.

Don't settle when it comes to relationships. Be honest with the person you are with. Be glad you are with that person and make it a two way street. If the relationship is not working out then change it or agree to leave it. If it is working out, do your best to make it work.

Don't settle when it comes to the recreational activities that make you happy and mold your character. There is nothing wrong with being part of a team. You can use what you learn from teamwork to help you in your life. And, there is nothing wrong with participating in something you enjoy doing alone. It might be what you need to keep you calm.

A few days ago you were a high school student. Now you are a young adult. All too soon you will be an older adult. You will learn that life goes by pretty fast.

So, take the advice of someone who has been there.

Don't settle.
