Whitish, Gordon S.

Gordon Samuel Whitish of Mineral Point, Wisconsin passed away on March 5, 2023, surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 78, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born to Samuel Whitish and Ruby (Edge) Whitish in Madison on November 10, 1944. Gordon grew up in the Montfort area and graduated from Iowa Grant High School in 1963. After high school, he worked for General Motors in Janesville.

In 1965, Gordon was drafted into the U.S. Army and was sent to South Korea for two years. After being discharged from the army, he returned to General Motors, and then worked at Hammersley Stone Company and Wingra Stone Company in Madison, until his retirement in 2006. Gordon was one of the most generous and kind people around. He never missed his children's endeavors, always supported various area charities and events, and was always selfless, putting others before himself. As a result, he was beloved by family and friends. Gordon was a great cook, who could fix or assemble anything and loved spending time with his family. His family was everything to him, especially his four grandchildren.

Gordon loved dogs, especially his grand pup Remi. In his retirement he co-owned two horses for harness racing and served on the Iowa Country Fair Board. He had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel around Wisconsin, the Midwest, Boston and abroad, having visited Spain, the Dominican Republic and Ireland.

Gordon is survived by his daughters, Amy Whitish-Temple and her husband Martin Temple of Melrose, MA, and Emily Fitzsimmons and her husband Scott Fitzsimmons of Mineral Point; his four grandchildren, Morgan (Casey) Lobdell, Kathryn "Katie" Fitzsimmons, Graham Fitzsimmons, and Alexandra Temple; his siblings, Dean (Jane) Whitish of Hollandale, WI, Sally Whitish (Dale Strand) of Prairie du Chien, and Dan Whitish of Madison.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents and his great niece Olivia Zimmer.

A memorial service will be held at 12:30 P.M. on Saturday March 11, 2023, at the Soman-Larson Funeral Home in Montfort. Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service at the funeral home on Saturday morning. Immediately following the service at the funeral home everyone is invited for food and followship at the Montfort United Methodist Church Hall. Burial will be in the Ebenezer Cemetery in Wingville Township Grant County, WI at a later date.

In lieu of plants and flowers memorials may be given to the Upland Hills Hospice, the Mineral Point FFA, or the Bethel United Methodist Church in loving memory of Gordon S. Whitish. Online condolences may be made at www.larsonfuneralhomes.com
