Winkers, Wilson

Wilson Winkers of Highland passed away Monday October 10, 2022, at the age of 87. He was born on November 6, 1934, to Earl and Jeanette (McGill) Winkers of Highland, WI. He attended Farmer's Ridge School and graduated from Highland High School in 1952.

In 1955, he purchased his own farm on Farmer's Ridge Road, rural Highland. He married Alice Biba on July 15, 1959, at St. John Nepomuc Catholic Church, Castle Rock Ridge. They farmed together until 1996, when they retired and moved to Highland. He served on the Highland schools and Highland township boards for many years. He was a faithful member of Ss. Anthony and Philip Catholic Church in Highland and a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus. He had a passion for CASE farm tractors, at one time owning more than 25 various models. He was a gifted football player in high school, earning the nickname "Golden Toe" for his ability to kick a football.

After he retired from farming, he kept a very active volunteer schedule. For nearly twenty years, he was a volunteer driver for the Iowa County ADRC. He delivered meals for SUN's Meals on Wheels Program and was a weekly presence at the former Bloomfield Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Dodgeville. He was custodian for Ss. Anthony and Philip Catholic Church, and he helped care for all three cemeteries in Highland. He was known throughout the community for his quick-wit and he would often tell you a riddle or two.

He was preceded in death by his wife Alice on May 24, 2012. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents Earl (2003) and Jeanette (2006) Winkers, his sister Mary (2022) and her husband Bill Stanek, brothers-in-law Don Biba and Bill Biba, and sisters-in-law Lorraine Menke and Frances Menke.

He is survived by brother Bill (Bonnie) Winkers of Spring Green, WI, and sister Dianne (John) Kohout of Montfort, WI. Additional survivors include many nieces and nephews, relatives, and a very close family of friends.

A parish rosary will be held for Wilson on Friday, October 28, 2022, at 3:30 p.m. with visitation to follow from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Ss. Anthony and Phillip Catholic Church in Highland. Additional visitation will be held Saturday, October 29, 2022, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the church. Funeral service will follow at 11am with Rev. Jim Murphy officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorials to the Highland Fire Department, Highland EMS, or Ss. Anthony and Philip Catholic Church would be greatly appreciated. The McGuire-Peterson-Houck Funeral Home, Highland, is serving the family. Online condolences may be made at
