Mensch, Richard D.
Richard D. Mensch, 84, died suddenly at home on August 26, 2022. He was born in Stuttgart, Germany on May 31, 1939. Dick and his parents, Albert and Lena, immigrated to the United States when he was 13 and settled in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Dick met Diane Rief, his partner in life, in the mid-sixties. They dated in person and then via letter while he was stationed in Korea during his time in the US Army. They married on November 26, 1966. After completing his college teaching degree, Dick and Di moved to Highland, Wisconsin where a teaching position awaited him. They welcomed two children, Scott and Linda. In Highland, Dick taught Reading, English, German, and did basically whatever else they asked him to do. He coached forensics for many years. His love for reading and words touched countless students and co-workers. After teaching for 27 years, he retired only to find himself at a new and fulfilling career writing for the Lands' End correspondence corps for 10 years. At Lands' End, Dick's creative talents were unleashed.
Dick became synonymous to the culture that was and is Highland. He was active in Ss. Anthony and Phillip Church, he helped establish a mobile food pantry, and he wrote, directed and played roles in several community theater productions. He wrote SO many poems and stories for so many different occasions. To his family, he was ever witty, ever steady, and ridiculously loyal. We all knew there was something unique about him.
Dick and Diane left Highland to simplify their lives and moved to an apartment in Verona and then to Parkside Assisted Living in DeForest. At Parkside, Dick touched a completely new group of friends who adored him for his humorous and gentle nature.
Dick leaves behind Diane, his beloved wife and caretaker of 55 years, a brother-in-law, Steven (Terry Rief), his son, Scott Mensch, daughter Linda (Curt) Bisarek, and his three treasured grandchildren Sawyer (fiancé Hilary Taylor) Mensch, Drew Bisarek, and Kyra Bisarek who carry magical childhood memories much because of their Grandpa Dick.
