Joan married Joe Balk on August 9, 1949, prior to moving to Dodgeville in the early 50's. Together, they had six children. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Joan helped her husband, Joe, by working as a bookkeeper for Balk's Small Engine and Balk's Shell. In 1981, Joan became the owner of Car Quest Auto Parts in Dodgeville. She worked hard to develop the talents she needed to accomplish her work in what was seen mostly as a man's area of expertise. She was also an active part of Team National.

In 2014, she married Jim Henry. They both worked as marketing agents for Team National, and together they enjoyed traveling the United States and abroad.

Early in her life she enjoyed hunting with her family. Later on, she relived her hunting experiences through her sons' and grandsons' stories. Joan loved her flower gardens and watching birds.

Joan is survived by five of her children, Kenneth (Saundra Hopkins) of Sunriver, OR; Kathleen (Jerry Severson) of Salem, WI; Kevin (Cindy), of Platteville, WI; Allen (Tammy), of Williams Bay, WI and Timothy of Dodgeville, WI; her brother, Peter Polodna of Madison, WI; 10 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Meyer; a grandson Joshua Balk; a daughter-in-law, Laurie Balk; her mother and father; one brother, Paul Polodna; two sisters, Ann Hexom and Karen White; and her husbands, Joseph Balk and Jim Henry.
