Balk, M. Joan
M. Joan Balk of Dodgeville, WI entered Heaven on her 90th Birthday on July 17, 2022. She was born of Vincent and Viola Polodna on July 17, 1932, in Prairie du Chien, WI. Joan married Joe Balk on August 9, 1949, prior to moving to Dodgeville in the early 50's. Together, they had six children. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Joan was an active leader in Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts. She stayed active in the scouting community for many years. One of her many accomplishments was starting the Girl Scout Farm near Hollandale, WI, also known as Echo Valley. Joan was also an active member in the Dodgeville Federated Woman's Club.
Joan helped her husband, Joe, by working as a bookkeeper for Balk's Small Engine and Balk's Shell. In 1981, Joan became the owner of Car Quest Auto Parts in Dodgeville. She worked hard to develop the talents she needed to accomplish her work in what was seen mostly as a man's area of expertise. She was also an active part of Team National.
In 2014, she married Jim Henry. They both worked as marketing agents for Team National, and together they enjoyed traveling the United States and abroad.
Early in her life she enjoyed hunting with her family. Later on, she relived her hunting experiences through her sons' and grandsons' stories. Joan loved her flower gardens and watching birds.
Joan is survived by five of her children, Kenneth (Saundra Hopkins) of Sunriver, OR; Kathleen (Jerry Severson) of Salem, WI; Kevin (Cindy), of Platteville, WI; Allen (Tammy), of Williams Bay, WI and Timothy of Dodgeville, WI; her brother, Peter Polodna of Madison, WI; 10 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Meyer; a grandson Joshua Balk; a daughter-in-law, Laurie Balk; her mother and father; one brother, Paul Polodna; two sisters, Ann Hexom and Karen White; and her husbands, Joseph Balk and Jim Henry.
Joan's family would like to thank the staff at Greenway Manor and Upland Hills Health for the compassion and kindness she received.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, July 22, 2022, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Dodgeville. Fr. William Van Wagner will officiate with inurnment in East Side Cemetery.
