Beerkircher, Arlene LaVonne
Arlene LaVonne Beerkircher, age 90, of Dodgeville, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, October 31, 2021 at her home. She was born on May 31, 1931, in Hickory Grove Township near Boscobel, the daughter of Fred and Olevia (Walker) Updike. From age 14 to 18, Arlene worked in a grocery store in Boscobel while also attending school. She graduated from Boscobel High School in 1948. Arlene married Darold Beerkircher on October 17, 1949, and together they farmed in rural Dodgeville. She worked side-by-side with Darold on the farm, doing everything from milking cows to feeding calves, baling hay, gardening, and mowing lawns, all while raising eight children. Following Darold's untimely death in 1982, Arlene continued farming with her sons. On September 16, 1983, she married Paul Metcalf of Dodgeville. He preceded her in death in 2005. Arlene lived independently in her home on the family farm until the time of her death.
Family was everything to Arlene. Her love of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was exceeded only by their love for her. Nothing made Arlene happier than having family to the farm for her delicious home cooked meals or working on her beautifully detailed stitcheries for family births and weddings. For years, she delighted in providing daycare to many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Every year Arlene orchestrated a grand Christmas Eve celebration, highlighted by a visit from Santa. Her face always beamed from the excitement and magic she helped create for the children. In her spare time, she enjoyed coloring, jigsaw puzzles, the occasional trip to the casino, and watching her great-grandsons as part of the JB Racing Team.
Arlene is survived by her children, Karen Beerkircher (David Potratz), Pam (Greg) Phelps, Randy (Chris) Beerkircher, Penny (Terry) Edwards, Rick (Kerry) Beerkircher, Tracy Beerkircher, and Russ (Angie) Beerkircher; a son-in-law, Dennis Metcalf; step-children Richard (Renee) Metcalf, Tom (Joyce) Metcalf, Carole (Tom) Morgan, and Jim (Nancy) Metcalf; a daughter-in-law, Monica Metcalf, 23 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Lulabel Rice and Leota Rust, and other relatives and friends. Arlene was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathy Metcalf, on August 4, 2021, and her siblings, Alta, Irma, Nelda, Donald, Dale, Ivan, Dorland, Eldon, and Mahlon.
In following Arlene's request, a private family service will be held at the Lulloff-Peterson-Houck Funeral Home on Monday, November 8, 2021. Pastor Craig Legel will officiate. Burial will follow at the Eastside Cemetery in Dodgeville.
Arlene left us with this advice for living life to the fullest: "Live each day as if it will be your last. Try to do good to everyone around you. Take time out of busy days to do something you really enjoy. Spend as much time as you can with family and friends."
