Miller, Lilas Mae (Kelly)

Lilas Mae (Kelly) Miller, age 103, longtime resident of Barneveld, passed away on Monday, Oct. 25, 2021, at Ingleside Communities, Mount Horeb.

Lilas was born Aug. 22, 1918, in Barneveld, to Louis and Mabel (Doescher) Kelly. Lilas graduated from Barneveld High School in 1935. In January of 1938, she was united in marriage to Albert Miller and their farming journey began.

In addition to farming, Lilas worked off the farm cleaning and wallpapering homes. When their farming journey was complete, she and Albert moved into the village of Barneveld and settled on Orbison Street. In retirement, Lilas and Albert enjoyed traveling the country in their RV and sharing stories of their adventures up until the passing of Albert in March of 2000.

Lilas was a longtime member of the Barneveld American Legion Auxiliary and a dedicated alumni of the Barneveld High School 50+ class reunion. At the age of 103, Lilas had seen and experienced many changes in the world. She had a sharp mind and deep knowledge of the history of Barneveld and her family; she enjoyed sharing that history with others. Lilas had a keen eye for tackling large jigsaw puzzles and a passion for recreating local architecture in the form of gingerbread! She also reminded us that you had to be tough to be old - she was right!

Lilas is survived by her sister-in-law, Katie Kelly, along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her adoring husband, Albert; her parents; her sisters and brothers, Evelyn (Virgil) Jabs, Lil (Bob) Theobald, Roy (Annie) Kelly, Lester (Jean) Kelly, Willard (Leona) Kelly, Marvin (Dorothy) Kelly, Vernon (Millie) Kelly and Ellard Kelly; and sister-in-law and brothers-in-law, Betty (Fred) Blaser, Louie (Helen) Miller and Hank (Florence) Goetz.

Services were held on Thursday, Oct. 28, 2021, with burial at White Church Cemetery, Barneveld.

The family would like to express their gratitude to caregivers, Mary (Blaser) Carley (niece), and dear friend, Else Greene.

Memorials can be made to the Barneveld EMS or Barneveld Public Library.
