Poppe, Beth Mae

Beth Mae "Betty" (nee Hanson) Poppe was born on March 11, 1937 east of Highland on the Hanson Homestead on Smokey Hollow Road, the second child of Jonathan Henry Albert and Elizabeth Barbara (nee Gabler) Hanson. She entered life eternal at the Richland Center Hospital on Sunday, October 17, 2021 at the age of 84 years, 7 months, and 6 days.

On May 11, 1937, she entered the Kingdom of Grace through Holy Baptism in the name of the Triune God at Christ Lutheran Church. For a short time she attended the one room grade school rural Highland, then attended Highland Grade School and Highland High School, graduating in 1954. Along with a young man named Martin Johann Poppe, Beth affirmed her baptismal promises in the Rite of Confirmation on August 6, 1950 at Christ Lutheran Church, Highland. Also at Christ Lutheran Church, she was united in Holy Matrimony to Martin Poppe, the son of Cord and Adelheid (nee Ehlers) Poppe on August 14, 1954. Martin passed away on May 22, 2019, less than 3 months before their 65th wedding anniversary.

They farmed, side by side, their entire married life near Highland, having owned a total of 5 farms. They were very faithful members in their church, and Beth served in various positions including Sunday School Teacher/Superintendent, and was an active member of the Ladies Aid and Lutheran Women's Missionary League.

Martin and Beth were blessed with a family of five children, 16 grandchildren, and 32 great grandchildren: children Martin D. (Kim), Randal (Cinda), Theresa (Larry) Bomkamp, Korena (Steve) Esser, and Donald (fiancé Crystal Buroker, and her children Jesse and Haley), grandchildren, Michelle (Jamey) Shemak; Quinn (Nate) Flynn; Corey (Darcie) Poppe; Clarissa Lindholm; Elizabeth (Kevin) Miller; Sarah (David) Nihles; Rachel (Daniel) Tredo; Jonathan Poppe; Nathanael (Molly) Poppe; Melissa (Josh) Wanek; Bobbi-Jo (Eric) Drone; Shonda (Brian) Pete; Jason Esser; Joshua (Hailey) Esser; Ryan (Cara and her children A.J. and Brynlee) Poppe; Tana (Logan) Vieth; great grandchildren, Christian, Jenna-Kate, Gavin and Taci Shemak; Kenan Poppe; Tierra Flynn; Cade, Carson and Caitlyn Poppe; Raelynn and Hadleigh Aide; Parker, Jacob, Ella and Caleb Nihles; Madelyn and Emily Tredo; Zadok, Titus, and Esther Poppe; Rylee, Grace and Kaycee Wanek; Joseph, Jaydon and Jillian Drone; Jaelyn, Beckum and Tenleigh Pete; and Baye Ryan and Annayah Poppe. She is also survived by her sister Nyla (Robert) Heisz, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her father Jonathan Hanson in May 1992, her mother Elizabeth in August 1993, her step-father Roy McIntosh in November1992, her step-mother Fern Hanson in July 2006, her father-in-law Cord Poppe in April 1975, her mother-in-law Adelheid Poppe in June 2001, her brother Donald in June 1963 in Germany while serving in the Army, her sister Phyllis (Richard) Anderson in 2011, her Great-Grandson Baye Ryan on December 7, 2009, and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 22, 2021 at Christ Lutheran Church in Highland. Pastor Dana Mark Wilkie will officiate with burial in the Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Friday beginning at 9:30 a.m.
