Mayfield, Ruby M.

Ruby M. Mayfield passed away on March 3, 2020 at her home in Murphy, North Carolina. She was born to Curtis and Claire James of Livingston, WI on September 15, 1943, along with a twin sister. Ruby grew up on a farm in the Iowa-Grant School District and graduated as the President of the Student Council. Her class was the first class at the Iowa-Grant High School. After graduation she went to Whitewater College for two years. She then decided to move to Madison to work. That lasted a couple of years, then she and her twin sister decided to go to California to find work. After a couple more years, she wanted to see more country so she went south. In 1980 she moved to Denver, Colorado where she met her future husband, Lee Mayfield. They left Denver and drove to Alaska. They lived in Alaska for several years until their home burned to the ground. They moved to Missouri, Arkansas and then finally to Florida where they had a garage door opener business. Her health was giving her problems, so they had to sell their business. The summer heat gave her more breathing problems. They liked to camp in North Carolina, so they moved there.
She had a special highlight in her life a few years ago. Through special DNA testing, her son that she gave up many years ago, found her. They had gotten to know each other and it became a very special relationship. He had two children, which made her a grandma. After Lee and Ruby got married, they always had two dogs that took place for kids. She called them her "boys".
She is survived by her husband Lee; her son Jimmy; two grandchildren, Reed and Bella; 3 sisters, Ruth (her twin), Marie, and Marcia; 2 brothers, Robert and Roger, 2 sisters-in-law, Barbara and Nina; 3 brothers-in-law, Kenny, Colin, and Robert; and many nieces and nephews.
