Cook, Bernadine C.
Bernadine C. Cook, age 93, of Montfort, Wisconsin passed away, with her family by her side, on Sunday December 15, 2019 at Upland Hills Nursing and Rehabilitation in Dodgeville. She was born on March 7, 1926, in Clifton Township, Grant County, Wisconsin the daughter of John and Julia (Winters) Straka.
Following her graduation from Cobb High School, Bernadine worked at the Cobb Canning Factory and for Parker Pen in Fennimore until May 11, 1948 when Bernadine was united in marriage to Roscoe Cook at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Montfort. After their marriage she and Roscoe went to work on building a life on their farm where she took great pride in raising her family while helping Roscoe. When her children had all entered the school years, she went back to work for Advance Transformer in Boscobel for 18 more years until her retirement.
Family was always very important to her and she loved supporting and guiding them through the years. Bernadine loved to cook and always had a big garden from which she especially enjoyed canning much of her harvest. Her family believes her apple pies, with the homemade crusts, were the best around. She was an avid reader with a deep interest in the Amish way of life. She also took great pride in her knitting and crocheting skills and crafted many beautiful items still treasured by her family and friends. With love and dedication Bernadine hand crafted afghans for each of her grandchildren as well as baby blankets for her great-grandchildren.
Bernadine was also an active member of St. Thomas Catholic Church and showed great dedication to her Lord. She was also a wonderful friend to many and will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.
Bernadine is survived by her five children; Greg (Beth) Cook of Avoca, Linda (Al) Lorenz of Madison, Rita (John) Rice of Cottage Grove, Brenda (Rich) Williams of Rewey, and Gerard Cook of Montfort, as well as 15 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren, sisters; Dorothy Ausse of Kenosha, Betty Dolan of Dodgeville, Delores Brennan of Dodgeville, and Beatrice Palzkill of Mineral Point, along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents John and Julia Straka, husband Roscoe, daughter Patricia and her husband Gerald "Jerry" Berg, infant brother Bernard, and brothers; Leo and Robert "Bob" Straka, brother-in-laws; LeRoy Ausse, Tom Palzkill, Gene Brennan, and Tom Dolan, sister-in-laws; Helen and Yvonne Straka.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday December 19, 2019 at the St. Thomas Catholic Church in Montfort with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday December 18, 2019 at the Soman-Larson Funeral Home in Montfort and also from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Thursday morning at the funeral home.
