Late run by Highland was not enough to get Miners

Taylor Russell put in 12 of her 17 points the first half to lead Shullsburg to a 36-17 halftime advantage and the Lady Miners went on to hand host Highland a 68-57 loss in a Six Rivers West game Thursday.
The win vaulted the Lady Miners into a second place tie with River Ridge and sent the Cardinals to third.
Highland picked up the pace the second half, outscoring Shullsburg 38-32 but could get no closer than 10 late in the game.
Silvia Bombin added 14 for Shullsburg with Camden Russell netting 13 and Olivia Brown 10.
Highland also had four players reach double digit scoring. Grace Dreischmeier and Harper Drury both hit 13 with Ella Cody adding 11 and Bronwyn Halverson 10.
Drury made things interesting with a trio of three pointers the second half including a banker near the end of the game that closed the gap.
"She helped us make a run," said Highland coach Josh Tarrell.
Shullsburg put in six of eight free throws down the stretch.
Tarrell felt while his team matched the Lady Miners in the physical aspect of the game they did not play the best game mentally.
"It did not seem like we were ready for this game mentally," Tarrell said. "We didn't take care of the basketball and we did not do a good job rotating or communicating on defense which led to too many uncontested looks. We never got into our style of basketball."
"We did make a comeback after being down 22 and cutting it to 10 but it was too late," Tarrell said. "We also did not get to the free throw line enough times."
