Panthers go 1-1 at River Ridge tournament, Barneveld goes 0-2

Iowa-Grant boys basketball came away with a win and a loss at a tournament in River Ridge Tuesday.
The Panthers faced a tough task in their first game, as they faced a well-rounded River Ridge team and were handed a 57-26 defeat.
In consolation, Iowa-Grant played the Barneveld Golden Eagles and rebounded with a 66-51 victory.
The Panthers were led in the first half by sophomore Cyle Steffel.
Steffel, who entered Tuesday leading Iowa-Grant in scoring with 13.4 points per game, poured in 16 points in just the first half.
He had five, two-point scores and made a pair of three-pointers.
He would end the game with 16, as he didn't score in the second half.
The Panthers also received quality play from junior forward Alex Popple, who scored 13 points in the first and added six in the second to lead the way with a 19-point performance, which is one of his highest-scoring games of his career.
Steffel and Popple accounted for over 75 percent of Iowa-Grant's points in the first half, as sophomore Ashton Schmitz added six points, and junior Jeran Rux had three.
Schmitz had seven points in the second to post 13 for the game.
Barneveld, meanwhile, struggled to find consistency, both offensively and defensively.
The Golden Eagles took an early 10-4 lead, but the Panthers clawed their way back and took over on both ends.
Barneveld was outscored 38-22 in the first half, but they outscored Iowa-Grant 29-28 in the second.
Senior Chase Ignatius did what he does best, which is score the basketball.
Ignatius had 23 points, with five, two-point scores, three, three-pointers and four made free throws.
Sophomore Kasey Helgeson added 13 points for the Golden Eagles.
Barneveld coach Tyler Sullivan stated, "This was a game I felt like suited our matchups, and I thought we might be able to use our athleticism to frustrate them offensively and defensively, but that wasn't the case."
He added, "We started out with great intensity, but they did a great job staying patient and really attacked our man-to-man and zone, both inside and outside. Bad rotations defensively coupled with bad offensive possessions dug a hole for us we couldn't get out of."
While he was relatively dissapointed with the Golden Eagles' performance, Sullivan gave credit to the Panthers for their execution.
"We played better in the second half, but they always seemed to have an answer," said Sullivan. "Steffel and Popple are two good players for Iowa-Grant, and they were just better than us today."
With the victory over Barneveld, the Panthers improved to 3-4 on the season.
Iowa-Grant's next game will be next year, Tuesday, Jan. 4 against number three-ranked Cuba City at home at 7:30 p.m.
With the loss, the Golden Eagles moved to 3-6 and will look forward to three consecutive home games.
They will start the home stand by playing New Glarus Monday, Jan. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
