Strommen wins 600th as Pec tops Argyle
On what was a record-setting night of baseball, the Pecatonica Vikings' baseball team won 9-1 over their Argyle Oriole counterparts Wednesday evening at Legion Community Park.
What the game will be most-remembered for was that it was the 600th baseball coaching win for longtime Pec head coach James 'Jim' Strommen, one of the winningest coaches in WIAA baseball history in the state of Wisconsin.
The Pec 'nine' scored two runs in the second inning, added a run in the third, added two tallies in the fourth, one more in the fifth and extended the lead with a three-run sixth inning. In all, the Vikings out hit their hosts 13-5 and were led by Bryce Johnsrud's three hits, by teammate Coy Ruegsegger's three hits and by two additional base hits from catcher Dakota Doescher.
Tyler McKeon led in run production by plating a team-high three runs and young teammate Carson Kurscher plated a pair of Pec runs.
Strommen utilized a pair of pitchers in this one, sending Ruegsegger to the mound for innings one through four. Ruegsegger finished his stint with a 4-hit, 2-walk, 6-strikout performance - before he was was relieved by freshman righthander Tyler McKeon.
The freshman hurler fanned three O's battersn his three inning stint on the bump while walking one and while allowing one base on balls.
Strommen's Vikings (13-2, 5-0) were slated to play Wednesday (June 2) at Mount Horeb, then host once-beaten and second place Barneveld tomorrow (Friday, June 4) at Blanchardville's McKellar park and battle Black Hawk at South Wayne Monday, before hosting the Fennimore Golden Eagles Tuesday, afternoon June 8.
