Dodgeville freshman finishes on podium at state
Bobby Wunnicke, Grant Miller, and Brady Wetter you have some company.
Those three are the Dodgeville wrestlers who made it to the WIAA state wrestling meet their freshman year. Now that list includes Charlie Meudt who came through the 2021 competition with sixth place. He was able to wrestle four matches at state and he got both a medal and a chance to be on the podium.
Charlie became the second freshman to place at state. Bobby Wunnicke was state champion his freshman year.
Brady Wetter was the last place winner at state in 2016 when he won the championship.
Dodgeville coach Ryan Lord was impressed with what the freshman accomplished both during the season and at state.
"It was great and he had a great year in general," Lord said. "He only weighs 103 pounds and he faced kids who were heavier who cut down for the tournament. That is pretty significant to give up that much in size."
"He never quit," Lord continued. "He stayed at it the entire time. He was able to start with a pin then he ran into a good sized senior his second match who he battled the whole time. He tried a takedown at the end but did not win."
Charlie showed his courage and love of wrestling in his next match.
"His third match he was in a body lock and something popped in his ribs," Lord said. "He was in pain but would not say anything. He was not 100% but refused to see a trainer and he said he was going to wrestle no matter what."
Lord added Charlie was fearless and said, "I am wrestling."
And that is exactly what he did.
