Three with 19 lead Cardinals past Southwestern
It is hard enough to stop one player who has the hot hand.
Stopping two is even harder.
But stopping three....
Well, just ask the Southwestern girls basketball team how hard that is and they will no doubt tell you it is impossible.
At least it was Tuesday when Highland's girls squad had three players put in 19 points each.
Combine that with a complete control of the middle with an intense defensive effort and it is no wonder the Cardinals came away with a 78-49 win in the non-conference home match-up.
Katelyn Esser was one of the Cardinals with 19 points to her credit. She helped her team to a comfortable 34-25 halftime lead with 15 of her points.
She also took her complete game up a level with, as coach Josh Tarrell put it, a "ton of steals."
"She played the best defensive game of her career," Tarrell said about Esser. "She completely shut down the middle like nobody's business."
Point guard Meg Tarrell also stuck in 19 points with a second half run where she put up 16.
The third 19 point scorer, as expected, was Rachel Miller who was steady all night, netting 10 the first half and nine the second.
"When you have three girls score like that you really put the pressure on their defense," Tarrell said. "You cannot stop something like that, especially when you are using the whole court."
It wasn't a completely perfect outing as Tarrell felt the team had a little fade the second half,
"But we played through it," he said. "Southwestern is a young team but they are very scrappy. We know we cannot take anyone lightly and we can't look past anyone."
The Cardinals had a schedule switch which puts them at Argyle tonight.
