Dodgers earn overtime win over Boscobel
Those watching the Dodgeville boys basketball team got something more than they bargained for as visiting Boscobel took the Dodgers to overtime in a non-conference match-up Tuesday.
Thanks to some dead on free throw shooting from junior Dillon Garthwaite and sophomore Matthew Pittz the Dodgers were able to survive in a 54-52 overtime win.
There were some gut check moments for the Dodgers when it came down to crunch time. The first one came after Tarek Fisher put the Bulldogs ahead 47-45 on a three pointer with only a few ticks left on the clock, but just enough to give the Dodgers one more try.
Garthwaite made the most of it with a drive down the middle and a shot that just beat the buzzer to tie the game.
It was then time to play smart and the Dodgers did that, scoring first on a pair of free throws by Garthwaite.
Next came Pittz with a pair of successful throws. Garthwaite moved the Dodges ahead 52-47 with one of two from the line.
Riley Bray found and opening underneath and dropped in a bank shot to cut the margin to 52-49.
Enter Garthwaite who slipped in two more throws to move the needle to 54-49.
With 1.5 left on the clock Boscobel had one more chance if they could make a three pointer and steal the in-bounds pass.
They got half of it right with a deep three from Armari Asamoah but could not snare the in-bounds pass.
"Too close for comfort."
That was how Dodgeville coach Matt McGraw saw it.
"We pulled it off but it certainly was not our best," said McGraw. "After a good start to the game we got out of rhythm, partly by Boscobel playing hard and partly by us rushing things and not playing to our strengths. It was a game of streaks and we had the last one."
But a win is a win and the game could have gone either way.
"I was happy with how we responded and did not panic after going down seven late," McGraw said. "Making free throws, timely shots including a buzzer beater to force overtime, getting stops and securing rebounds were all important in our comeback. It wasn't always pretty but it was nice to come out with a win."
Garthwaite led the Dodgers in scoring with 15, 13 in the second half and overtime and Pittz added 14.
Charlie Keith scored nine, four in the last two minutes to keep the Dodgers either ahead or close.
"They had all of our points in overtime going seven of eight from the free throw line," McGraw said.
On the defensive end McGraw credited Christian Jacobssen with holding Boscobel's best overall scorer to four second half points.
"That was big because he was a big reason they got back in the game in the first half," McGraw said.
