Highland girls take control of boards, Benton
Without the rebound game working for the Cardinals the first half, host Benton was able to hang around.
Not that the Highland girls team was not doing well...they were leading 43-27 at the half...but their coach, Josh Tarrell, knew they could do better.
So they talked it over at halftime and the second half was all Highland. The girls controlled the boards on both ends of the court, they stole the ball, they ran the floor and they mixed in nine three pointers for good measure.
At the end the Cardinals hung an 89-49 win over the host Zephyrs.
'If you get the offensive rebounds you win the game," Tarrell said after the Cardinals swept the boards the second 18 minutes. "We played great offensively and were good at times defensively. We can clean up our defense and be better."
One of the performances stood out over others who were expected. Malayna Fredericks came off the bench and erupted for 15 points, 11 of them the first half.
"She had a very nice game for us and was impressive," said Tarrell.
The strong offensive performance led to four players in double figures and one more with nine points. Rachel Miller led with 20, Katelyn Esser added 17, Fredericks netted 15, Meg Tarrell 14 and Katelyn Mueller nine. The Cardinals had 10 players reach the scoring column and 12 played.
"It was a good win," Tarrell said. "I was very proud of how we played."
Jacelyn Cummins led the Zephyrs with 14 points.
