Grateful for our local community
|For the last year and a half, the Dodgeville Chronicle, the Democrat Tribune and the Pecatonica Valley Leader have reported the area happenings. That will always continue-especially during a pandemic.|
Reflecting on the last year or so, it is not lost on me that there have been many sudden changes that have affected us-the way we live, the way we interact with one another, and the way we obtain our information.
Being a news reporter, it is my job to keep my eyes open on the things going on. I can't help but wonder, what will life be like once we get back "to normal," whatever that normal may be.
There are two constants that have remained the same:
1) We will keep telling the stories. In one of our staff meetings, one of the thoughts that came to our mind was "how long will we keep covering the pandemic?" To be honest, I don't know the answer to that question. The best answer I do have however is until we are told otherwise. To say the pandemic is not here would be dishonest, although we are making progress with vaccinations. This is something that we only dreamed about last year at this time. Stories about the pandemic mean different things-how schools are being affected, what is happening to businesses, we do our best to cover it all. We do the best we can. The most important thing is, the pandemic will be a part of our world's history, and our local papers will chronicle that (not sure if pun intended or not).
2) We are a resilient community. Iowa County is a community like no other. Innovative in the way that we have discussions. While we may not agree with each other, we can agree that we want everyone to be safe. When tragedy strikes, we come together and support one another. When a beloved community member passes, we as a community honor them in the best way that honors their legacy. We look out for each other when we are struggling, we tell each other information we need others to know-not what we want to know.
There are times I have shaken my head at my community, and there are times where I have smiled at my community. I am grateful for my community in all scenarios.
