Winter has definitely set in here starting Friday afternoon. From then, into Saturday morning, we got about three inches of heavy snow. It was mixed with some freezing rain too! Most sporting and any events were cancelled Friday night and when I came down to the office around 7 a.m. Saturday morning my windshield was frozen over with rain by the time I got within two blocks. Also my vehicle's temperature gauge said 17 when I backed out of my garage and it read 2 degrees by the time I reached the office. I know that the snow was heavy because before "we" left for breakfast I shoveled out the back door and the sidewalk out front!

The "we"going to breakfast were Terry Carroll, Bob Kratochwill and myself. For the second straight week we were at Country Kitchen in Dodgeville, not wanting to tackle the roads leading elsewhere. We arrived shortly after 7:30 and were the first customers at a place that opens at 7 a.m. I'm guessing a lot of people were still digging out! By the time we left there were three other tables of people eating.

I received an email about Sunday (19th) being the birthday of Edgar Allen Poe, a famous American poetry/story writer. He was born in 1809. I read several of his works (The Raven & The Tell-Tale Heart) while in college for an American Literature class. It's hard to believe that he was born 211 years ago!

For those of you wanting to do some ice fishing, the Highland Lions Club Dean Olson Memorial Fisheree is this Sunday at Blackhawk Lake located off of Highway 80 between Highland and Cobb. The weather is supposed to be partly sunny and in the mid 30's with no precipitation. We are supposed to have some snow Wednesday, Thursday and Friday though! This fisheree is a lot of fun with a kid's fishing contest, a lot of raffle prizes, euchre and just good company! It's also a good fundraiser for the Highland Lions Club. See the banner at the top of this column.

I was crossing the main street in Dodgeville the other day when a car came to a screeching halt. The driver yelled out his window, "I'm only stopping because it's you!" That driver was former Dodgeville Area Chamber of Commerce Director Bob Berglin, who we get to see several times a year at the Red Room for Friday morning breakfast. I can't believe he stopped!
