We need safeguards to protect the elderly
Senior citizens are becoming victims of scam, robbery, assault, etc. As Baby Boomers age, the elderly are a growing part of our country's population. We must ensure their safety.
While some seniors are frail and need support, many are independent, self-reliant, and do not have caregivers. Whatever the health and living situations may be, one thing is common - they are increasingly becoming targets of alleged criminals.
Over the last one year, in Wisconsin, there were reports that an 84 year-old woman was pushed to the ground and robbed outside Piggly Wiggly in Town of Ledgeview, another 84 year-old was robbed when walking home from a grocery store in Glendale, a 76 year-old man was thrown to the ground by an armed robber in Madison, an alleged contractor scammed elderly individuals in Columbia County, and more.
The elderly living in the community are our grandparents, parents, uncles and aunts, friends, and neighbors. Many are vulnerable, and need protection. As a society, we must pay attention to the growing needs of seniors and ensure their safety.
