March is Women's History Month
While March is St Patrick's Day and the month that kicks off Spring, there is another significance of the month of March.
March is Women's History Month. This came into effect in 1987, after Congress passed Pub. L 100-9 designating March as Women's History Month. This action resulted from petitions by the National Women's History Project.
Since 1988, U.S. presidents have issued annual proclamations designating the month of March as Women's History Month.
There are many ways one can celebrate Women's History month at home.
Read works written by women. There are a few I recommend. You can't go wrong with anything written by Brene Brown, a social worker who has many years of research on empathy and vulnerability. One I plan on getting started on (that I have put off for too long) is Untamed by Glennon Doyle.
Support a women owned business. There are many in Iowa County to choose from. A simple Google search will help with that.
Be thankful for the women in your life: family or otherwise. While it took a man and a woman to create you it took a woman to make the decision to keep you and to work through the pain of bringing you into this world. A mother and father spent many sleepless nights feeding you changing you and comforting you when that ear infection just wasn't going away. All the while that mother was shedding many tears asking what more could be done to help you. She was already doing it and it took many nights to get you to where you are.
If your mother wasn't present in your life, you might have found that woman role model through a favorite teacher you had, or a 4-H leader, a softball coach, an aunt, a grandmother, or a great family friend. Family isn't always blood and wherever you can find a positive woman role model I suggest you take full opportunity of it and to not let it slip away.
These are just a small list of ways one can show their support for the women in their life. Just by being supportive and showing your appreciation for them for the sacrifices made by them makes a huge difference.
