One of the many tests to be taken in life for our seniors
|Usually around this time of year, I write something congratulating the senior class of our Iowa County high schools. That tradition will never change.|
Although, this time is different. Life as you know is different. Seniors all across the U.S. are struggling with the fact that schools shut their doors, having to say goodbye when it shouldn't have been goodbye.
I would like to say I know how you feel, but unfortunately that isn't true. It was supposed to be sports banquets, senior trips, senior skip day and senior pranks all across the country. Simply put, that didn't happen for you and I'm sorry it happened that way.
I scrolled across an Instagram post from Matthew McConaughey one of my favorite actors the other day, and I will take a moment to pull an excerpt from that post.
"You are originals. Whether this COVID-19 pandemic was here or not, you're originals. You specifically, are all originals because you're having a virtual graduation in a virtual ceremony. So don't be upset about that. Remember, you'll probably be the only one, enjoy that."
And you know what? He's right. In many ways you gained something that many won't in their lifetime. Instead of a loss, you may want to consider this experience as a gain. You lived during a time when things were uncertain, and I know you'll look back and say, "I did it."
Yes you did. You still get to graduate, you still have many memories you can look back on while you were in school. Those memories can never be taken away from you, not even by a global pandemic.
There were many quizzes, projects, evaluations and tests you had to take to get to where you are. But just remember this, those weren't the only tests you have. In fact, there will be many more tests going forward. This is a big one for you.
Commencement is another word for graduation, which you've heard many times. Graduation is not only a time to congratulate yourself on the things you've done, but a time to open a door leading down a path to the rest of your life. Take what you've learned now, and apply it in lessons you will have later.
This isn't the end, its just the beginning. Congratulations to Iowa County's Class of 2020. You've got this.
