Be thankful for the memories
|The holidays are most definitely a wonderful, and crazy busy time to spend with our loved ones. However, it can also be a time that is hard when you have lost a loved one. Many of us are familiar with that heartbreak, myself included. |
When I lost my grandmother earlier this summer, I knew in the back of mind that I would have to deal with the loss as I have lost other dear people in my life. It was a true reminder that it doesn't become easier with each loss. Thanksgiving and Christmas were always wonderful times to spend with my grandmother, and like many, it will be tough during this first year. However here are the things I am constantly reminding myself of:
1. It's ok to feel the heartbreak: I know I will not be the only one affected by the loss of my grandmother and I know that it will be hard for everyone the first time around. Everyone experiences grief and their own way, but by being together and supporting each other, that is what is most important.
2. The memories will always be there: For me Christmas and Thanksgiving were times that I could see my grandparent's Charles Dicken's Christmas Display scatter through half of their house. It will be different without Grandma this first year, but there are so many wonderful memories that she left us with. I know deep down that she would want us to continue enjoying those memories and perhaps making some new ones.
3. Volunteering in my community: I am looking forward to the Holiday Parade and the Home for the Holidays celebrations, not just in Dodgeville, but also other areas of Iowa County. I haven't planned them all but I look forward to getting out seeing people and sharing the true importance of the Holiday Season.
Be kind to yourself and have a wonderful holiday season.
