Not guilty pleas for Miller Road case
Alexis E. Barry and Laurie Barry, the daughter and mother accused of first degree reckless homicide, were arraigned in Iowa County Court Wednesday on the charge.
Both are charged with causing the death of 13-year-old Selah Kaden on May 31, 2018 at their rural home in the Town of Mineral Point. The reckless homicide charge carries a party to a crime modifier.
Iowa County Judge Margaret Koehler first addressed the charge against Alexis Barry who appeared at the 11:30 a.m. hearing along with her mother and attorney Brian Brophy. After waiving the reading of the charge Judge Koehler determined Alexis Barry was standing mute and entered a not guilty plea.
The same process was followed for Laurie Barry with the same not guilty plea entered. Laurie Barry also stood mute.
Iowa County District Attorney Matt Allen appeared for the State along with ICSD detective Lana Bowers. DA Allen said he plans to file a motion and brief by November 1 to join the cases.
Judge Koehler learned that Attorney Brophy will be out of the country in mid November with the holidays to follow so they agreed his response will be filed by January 17, 2020.
Judge Koehler then set a motion hearing for February 21, 2020 at 1 p.m. with a scheduling conference to follow the same day.
