Barneveld school board settles guaranteed maximum price with contractor for remodel
The Barneveld School Board approved the guaranteed maximum price (GMP) for the school remodeling project with the firm handling the construction from management to completion.
The company, GCSchmidt, and the board agreed the GMP for union work will be $14,442,652. The board also set aside $769,412 for non-union work.
District Administrator Brett Stousland said he expects no problem staying within the budgeted number and the board committee will look at costs to see if there can be cost cutting here and there.
The board discussed a request made last meeting that they consider naming the basketball addition Jim Myers Court.
Board member Tadd Owens told the board he feels Jim Myers is very deserving of the honor but he is concerned with how it ties in with board policy.
"We have a policy for naming rights which are tied to financial contributions and we would need to change that to have this happen," he said.
He said the policy should either be adhered to or revised.
"If we aren't careful we could receive requests to names wings, classrooms, stage, etc for someone who has been instrumental in gaining attention for our district," he said. Names such as Duane Elfering for tech ed awards, Duane Draeper for drama, Rita Zander for a long teaching career and former teacher Tom Shinko were discussed.
Stousland asked the policy committee to review the present policies and see if they want to consider a policy for recognition.
The board reviewed the open enrollment numbers per class and discussed the number of special and regular education students they could take for open spots. Students can be accepted as long as they do not require extra staff which the board agreed would not be cost effective.
In other business the board set February 20 as the date for a board retreat where they will share visions for the district in an informal setting.
They also approved a resignation and a new hire for the same position. Maintenance crew member John Oxley gave his resignation and Brian Hoesley was hired to replace him.
The board also approved the 2019-20 calendar as presented.
