By Levi Zimmerman A Mineral Point mother and daughter accused of killing a 13-year-old girl in their care are on trial this week. Laurie Bary, 53, and daughter Alexis Barry, 30, stand trial on one count each of first-degree reckless homicide as party to a crime in the 2018 death of Selah Kaden. Kaden was sent to live with the Barry's in April 2018 after Kaden's adoptove parents, Dave and Lisa Kaden, needed to tend to another daughter's needs. The Kaden's adopted Selah, a Chinese girl, when she was 19 months old. Monday was the start of an anticipated two-week long jury trial. Once jurors were seated and jury instructions given by Iowa County Circuit Court Judge Margaret Koehler, opening statements were heard. District Attorney Matt Allen, leading the prosecution, went first. "Laurie and Alexis Barry showed uter disregard for human life," said Allen. Allen said the defendants smothered and suffocated the child in response to what they said was Selah Kaden's outbursts on the day of her death, May 31, 2018, including "fake fainting" and falling hard on the floor....
