Denny McGraw is 2021's Farmers
|The Iowa County Farmers Appreciation Day hits its 35th milestone this upcoming weekend. Farmers Appreciation Day is celebrated each year recognizing Iowa County's farmers and agribusinesses that help support local farmers. It is also recognized as a time to educate the community about the agricultural industry.|
The Farmer's Appreciation Day (FAD) committee has announced that this year's parade marshal will be none other than retired Dodgeville School District Agricultural Teacher and FFA Advisor. That man is Dennis McGraw.
FAD Committee member Mike Reilly stated that McGraw has been a Farmers Appreciation Day promoter from day one, from setting up the event's Petting Zoo to providing guidance to Dodgeville FFA members and ag students.
Not only is McGraw an agricultural teacher, but has also been a track and cross country coach.
"He's always putting youth first, ' Reilly said. "He has always been a very positive person in every way with anything he tackles."
McGraw has been a part of the FAD committee for 15 years, and he has always enjoyed being a part of it.
"It's a good group of people trying to make a fun event for the community," McGraw said. "The committee works really hard to make an event that everybody can enjoy."
Agriculture is Iowa County's most prominent industry.
"It's the grassroots of America," McGraw said. "It's everyone coming together. If we didn't have farmers we wouldn't have the agribusinesses that meet the needs of farmers and communities. It's all one big community."
While McGraw felt that there were others who were more deserving, the FAD committee took no hesitation in selecting him.
"Denny has always approached whatever he does by giving 100% all of the time," FAD committee member Ken Von Rueden said. The students and athletes he taught and coached benefited greatly from him because of his energy and commitment."
"I've just always been a humble type of person," McGraw said. "But I am very honored to be able to do it. It takes everybody to make things go. Everyone has been so kind and helpful to me throughout and that makes things easier. It also makes it special this year because with things opening back up, it's more about getting to see people and visit them again. As time passes, you definitely appreciate those moments more."
