Friends of Military Ridge State Trail, FMRT, have received the 2020 HERO award! This award, given by the Friends of Wisconsin State Parks Board of Directors, is based on nominations from the public and Friends members. The Military Ridge Trail is a mostly crushed limestone trial that runs from Dodgeville to Fitchburg,WI where it meets up with the Capital City Trail. This local jewel has been an invaluable asset to local business and a boon to users, especially during the current pandemic. Use of the trail has increased immensely in 2020 and has provided users an opportunity to experience the natural beauty of the Driftless Area, exercise, and be outdoors. The FMRT is a group of volunteers, who work to support the park staff and provide a safe, enjoyable experience to trail users. Friends originate and maintain kiosks and memorial benches; help with bridges; restored and currently maintain the Ridgeway Train Depot; write grants; provide trail information via a website, trail maps and pamphlets; work on trail beautification projects; provide wildlife observation opportunities; maintain and supply several nature oriented little libraries; promote safe use of the trail; and support local groups that use or impact the trail. Interested in becoming a friend or attending a Friend's monthly meeting? Do you have ideas to improve the trail or the trail users experience? Leave a message with a call back number at 608 437-7393 ext 2, or email info@friendsofmilitaryridgetrail.org
