Winter sports athletes will be able to start practice according to dates set by the WIAA instead of waiting as recommended by the Iowa County Health Department.
Girls basketball will begin their winter season Monday with boys basketball and wresting starting the Monday after. Those are the dates set by the WIAA, the governing body for Wisconsin high school athletics.
The board had received a recommendation from the Iowa County Health Department suggesting that close contact sports be put on hold until at least December 4.
But, board members and High School Principal Chris Gotto felt the programs could start on time if proper protocol is followed.
It was also pointed out that middle school basketball has already started.
To keep sanitizing within reach, the board decided not to open gyms and school facilities to the public until the COVID pandemic turns for the better.
With 70 students and at least 10 staff members affected by COVID either by having it or by coming in contact with it, the district is now in virtual. It was noted that the week after Thanksgiving recess will also be done virtually in an attempt to stop a surge after holiday gatherings.
"There is a lot of COVID in our area," said District Administrator Stephanie Hubbard.
In other matters the board voted to not offer classes or athletics to district residents open enrolled in virtual learning outside the district. Board member Kris Spurley voted against the motion to not allow, stating that she has been told that allowing participation may help recruit those students into the district.
The board voted to change the 2020-21 athletic co-curricular code pertaining to early dismissal days. It was decided students should be present all day on early dismissal days.
The board also discussed the ticket policy for winter events and decided to follow the same procedure as fall sports.
The board approved a resolution designating their public depository and amended who could make withdrawls.
