Holes Fore a Cause turning
into quite the fundraiser
An idea that sprang up after a night of golfing has turned into a major fundraiser for three very worthy causes.
Dodgeville Athletic Director Joey Martin, Lands' End vice-president Michael Perrotti and local beverage distributor Kieran Kinney were discussing how many organizations have been cash strapped when the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the cancellation of fundraisers. During the discussion came an idea that will be fun and no doubt knock something off each man's bucket list.
The idea that came out of the discussion was golfing from sun up to sundown for a minimum of 72 holes and seeking pledges for worthy causes in the process. They thought they may be able to generate a few hundred bucks while having a fun day.
They were wrong.
They have generated over $7,000 in pledges as of midday Tuesday and still have some time left before teeing off at sun up Friday at Dodge-Point Country Club. It will be tough going until the club opens a few hours later and they can get a cart each.
The three men are neighbors in the Diamond Oaks subdivision in southeast Dodgeville. When the idea was concocted a few weeks ago they had talked about playing at the House on the Rock Resort which is a 27 hole course but the decision was made to move it to Dodge-Point and play the 18 holes four times.
Besides helping three great causes, the trio of linksters will knock one more thing off their bucket list.
The event has taken on a life of its own with the creation of a Facebook page. On it you can read the whats and whys and donate via gofundme.
Of course there is the question of "what if it rains?"
"If that happens we will play on through it as long as the course is open," he said. "We will have our rain gear with us just in case."
Martin is playing for the Dodgeville Food Locker with Kinney golfing for the Iowa County Humane Society. Perrotti is golfing for his friend who is donating a kidney so his sister can move up on the list and receive one this week.
Here is what each golfer has to say about their fundraiser.
As Many of you know, Golf is one of my favorite things to do...a few weeks ago, me and my golf buddies were trying to solve the world problems and thought... "What if...we played as many holes as we can, from sun up to sun down and see if we could raise money for charity? On August 28 at 6 AM we will start at Dodge Point Country Club! So here we are, Want to join me in making a difference? I'm raising money to benefit Iowa County Humane Society, and any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.
A couple of weeks ago a few friends of mine and I were talking about golfing from sunup to sundown. In this conversation we were talking about how we know some organizations that are struggling to fundraise during these pandemic times, so we thought why not see if we can get some pledges for each hole that we play throughout that day and we'll give it all to the charity of our choice.
Of course, we all thought this would be a very small amount and that it wouldn't take off with strides. Well... we were wrong! In less than 5 days, we have raised just under $3,000 between the three organizations. Through this, some people are pledging $0.25/hole, $0.50/hole, and even $1.00/hole OR simply a generous donation of any amount.
What organization am I raising money for? The Dodger Food Locker! The Dodgeville Food Locker is a non-profit organization set up right here in Dodgeville, WI to help our local kids! This organization can't stand the thought of anybody going hungry in our community, especially the kids. The Dodgeville Food Locker was started by a group of Dodgeville Kiwanis and community members. The group seeks to provide means for local school kids to buy food on the weekends. They have partnered with Dodgeville Piggly Wiggly and Ridgeway Badger Mart, where kids can purchase what they need for the weekend.
If you're interested in donating to the Dodgeville Food Locker or our other charities, please visit our Facebook page "Holes Fore A Cause" and search for the Go Fund Me pages.
Thanks for your time & thank you soooooo much for your donations!
Hello, my name is Mike Perrotti. I am hoping you find it in your heart to donate as I raise money for the Wersal family through a golf marathon on August 28. A couple friends and myself will be competing in a minimum of 72 holes of golf in one day to raise money and bring awareness to the crippling disease that Tricia Wersal is fighting, cystic fibrosis.
Tricia was born with cystic fibrosis. She's since undergone years of medication, therapy and even a double lung transplant 14 years ago. She now faces a kidney transplant taking place at the end of this month, August 2020. Her brother, and one of my good friends, Matt Wersal, is donating his kidney in a kidney exchange so she can have this procedure done. Enough is enough and we'd like to put an end to CF and help out this great family in need. We appreciate your support!
