IG School Board gives "OK" for summer weightlifting
|On Monday, June 22nd, the Iowa-Grant School Board agreed to allow summer weightlifting with precautions, social distancing, and protocols to follow. A committee for new gym banners at the high school was created to go over design options and prices. As of currently, graduation is still planned to be on July 11th in some form. The board also voted in favor of allowing an in person summer credit recovery for students in need.|
Athletic Director, Casey Clausius brought to the board a recommendation to allow summer weightlifting to begin on July 6th. A new plan on how to maintain social distancing and guidelines set by Iowa County Health and Human Services had been noted. This new plan includes the cleansing of equipment in between uses, keeping groups to 8 when possible, along with screening questions before a student is able to enter the facilities or participate. This recommendation does include the use of the gym or wrestling room for open gyms/mats.
A committee comprised of IG coaches, past and present, has been formed to go over designs for new high school gym banners. Decisions regarding the design and prices will be presented to the board for approval prior to the banners being made.
Discussion on how to host the class of 2020 graduation ceremony was also discussed at the meeting. With the increase of cases in Iowa and Grant counties, the likelihood of Iowa County allowing all parents and graduates to attend an in-person ceremony is highly unlikely. There are also concerns as to whether social distancing can be enforced and maintained in the events an in-person ceremony occurs.
Chris Gotto, the high school principal, requested the board allow a limited number of students to participate in an in-person credit recovery option in August. The board voted to allow exploration of in-person summer school opportunities.
A committee of board members was created to discuss information on how and when to start school for the 2020-2021 school year. A decision for insurance renewals was also made at the meeting. There was a decrease in insurance cost overall, although the money saved is planned to be put towards cyber insurance. Next year's graduation is set to be May 29th, 2021. The board followed the recommendation of the ad hoc policy committee, approving the 5000s board policies. The committee plans to meet one more time.
