Dodgeville Middle School helps a lot of groups
"Giving back and doing things for the community," that's what Dodgeville Middle School Advisor Jackie Kamps has been promoting to the DMS Student Leadership Team.
In the month of December alone the students decked the doors and spread some winter cheer at CrestRidge Assisted Living in Dodgeville. They helped the residents make beautiful felt snowflakes with multi-colored glitter glue and jewels.
They also rang the bells for the Iowa County Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign.
"We had a blast while raising money for this wonderful organization," the ringers said.
Through the help of Culver's they raised money towards the necessary funds to bring two therapy dogs to DMS in the new year.
They supported the DMS Builders Club with their "Share the Warmth" project by donating items with a $100 donation to purchase items they needed to provide warmth for many needy families in the school district.
They had a slide show abut the work of #TEAMTREES, a subgroup of The Arbor Day Foundation that was looking to plant 20 million trees around the globe by January 1, 2020. One dollar donation is equal to planting one tree. DMS has 251 trees planted in the school's name.
The group is working with Hodan Center Services, Inc. of Mineral Point to complete a service learning project in the spring. The group has donated $200 to the project with all donations made before 2020 being matched by a private donor.
A big fundraiser was their last one of the year, a Penny War. It ran from December 12 to December 18 to support UnityPoint Health-Meriter Child and Adolescent Unit, a 20-bed inpatient facility for young people ages 6-18 in Madison with severe behavioral challenges such as depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and self-harming behaviors. Because of the limited number of beds teens are turned away or put on a waiting list. The students raised $1,287.61 in five short school days with the student leadership organization matching the $1,287.61 for a total of $2,575.22 to help add beds. Also, Unity Point Health-Meriter has a donor who will be matching their donation making a total of $5,150.44.
The 8th grade won the Penny War and enjoyed a 9th hour social in the cafeteria gymnasium and mat room.
The group is constantly looking for ways to assist the students and staff at DMS while also supporting the community with different service projects.
