Former Iowa-Grant Teacher Makes Initial Appearance in Child Abuse Charge


A Mineral Point man, Kirby Grutz, 31, the former Iowa-Grant Physical Education Teacher, made his initial appearance Tuesday, along with his attorney Michael Curran, in the Iowa County Courthouse in front of the honorable Judge Matthew Allen.  

Grutz faces a potential Child Abuse-Recklessly Causing Harm Felony I charge if convicted.  According to the criminal complaint, the reported abuse happened during a second-grade gym class on November 23rd, 2023.  

The prosecuting attorney in this case is Curtis Johnson and a $5000 signature bond was set for Grutz.  Judge Allen instructed Grutz to have no contact with the child or place of residence.

Grutz must contact the Iowa County Sheriff’s Department to make arrangements for booking by February 14th, 2024.  A status conference is scheduled for March 19th, 2024 at 10:30 a.m.  

If convicted, Grutz could face up to three and a half years in prison and $10,000 in fines.
