Along The Ad Routes

By Mike Reilly-mreilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

We received a nice note with a renewal for the Chronicle from Mary (Boldt) Tygum of Monona. She was a 1963 graduate of Dodgeville High School with brother Pat. She said, "I'm enclosing a check for $45 for a one year subscription to the Chronicle. I' sorry it's late! Thank you both and your staff for making the Chronicle a wonderful local newspaper. I look forward to receiving it every week."

Mary grew up on a farm just north of Dodgeville. She said she would stop this summer when she and her husband (Phil) go to the cemetery for her folks.

I was coming out of the Piggly Wiggly parking lot in Dodgeville on the west side the other day and had a vehicle in front of me that was turning left. I was turning right, but all of a sudden the vehicle started backing up. I backed up to give it some room. It turned right. As I was heading out I noticed the city had some cones out as they were doing work on the corner by Spring Street. I thought, oh that's why the person was backing up!

Well, anyone who was wanting more snow, we sure did get it on Saturday. It began around 9:30 a.m., quit in the afternoon with about three inches on the ground and then came like a racehorse out of the gate around 7:00 p.m. and I'm not sure when it quit, but about 10" is what I felt totaled out! I shoveled my walkway at home and then had about 1/3 of my sidewalk done when a good samaritan was doing my neighbor's walk to the south and kept coming down mine with his plow - thank you big time! I did my driveway to the street so I could get my car out for work. When I got to the office, again I had about 1/3 of the sidewalk done out front when Dave Brick came to my resuce with his plow! How could I be so lucky twice! Shoveling isn't that bad to do and I need the exercise. The snow wasn't that heavy, but there was an awful lot of it!

The snow didn't start on Saturday as early as predicted so our breakfast took Bob, Terry, Dewey, Dave and me to Gus's Diner in Verona. We picked that spot because we wanted to meet up with former longtime Dodgeville resident Dennis Kopps. His sister Kathy and her husband Larry Alm picked him up from his assisted living spot on the east side of Madison and brought him to Verona. The eight of us had some very good conversation. It was good catching up with Dennis and his new life plus hearing from Kathy and Larry about what was new with them!

And, at Gus's Diner, the food was really good and there was plenty of it. Bob and I had their eggs and pork chop special that inlcuded hash browns and toast/fruit or pancake for under $11! The French toast Dave and Terry had was huge. Dewey sat way down on the other end so I didn't see what he ate.

Today (February 2) is Groundhog Day. I sure hope it's overcast all day long. That will mean an early spring. If not, then it's six more weeks of winter! That's probably what it will be no matter what! Check out the above photo of just what the groundhog may look like around here!
