Along The Ad Routes

By Mike Reilly-mreilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

The other day I was crossing the street in downtown Dodgeville and found out one in four vehicle drivers are courteous and obey the laws. Three cars, all licensed Wisconsin, would not stop to let me cross the street in the crosswalk (in my advanced age I don't just walk out in front of them like I used to)! The fourth one stopped and I crossed. That vehicle was a school bus!

As of Sunday we are just about snowless on the ground, except for that under big trees, between buildings and in big piles. It rained, thundershowered and was very windy Saturday night. That rain and the temperatures reaching 50 degrees plus made it very tough for the snow to hang around!

Come Monday though, the ground was covered again with around five inches of that white suff!

Saturday morning Bob, Terry and I met at the Chronicle office to head to the Spring Green General Store to meet Dewey, who lives in Spring Green. Dave couldn't make it, so the four of us enjoyed a meal with Terry and Dewey having their pancake special, which is very good every time. I think they had peaches and walnuts in them, with pure maple syrup. Bob and I had something called the Gemini. It is made of potatoes, onions, peppers and cheese with a mild salsa sauce. I liked it! We didn't have time to do any sightseeing this trip because the three of us had to head back to Dodgeville to attend a wake. There are way too many of those things happening in the past few months.

The Lenten Season began last Wednesday, March 2. There goes me eating sweets and desserts until Easter (April 17). I love pie, almost any kind and chocolates can be my downfall for a snack in between meals! On the upside of it all, although what I give up is something I love it is something that I can lose weight from at the same time. Usually I lose around seven pounds during Lent. That would put me around 165 lbs. and that's good! I will report about it down the road!

Don't forget to set your clocks ahead Saturday night or Sunday morning at 2:00 a.m. because it's Daylight Savings time again! It seems like we just set them back a few days ago - how time flies fast!

Today (Thursday) is a bizarre day labeled "National Find a Pay Phone Booth Day"! There is an estimated 100,000 left in the U.S.with about 20% of those in New York. The last pay phone booth I remember using as in Highland when I called back to the Chronicle office while on my Ad Route! See one in the photo above.

Speaking of Highland, their girls basketball team won over the weekend and will be making their first-ever appearance at state at the Resch Center in Green Bay Friday morning. Good Luck!
*****
The Mineral Point girls replicated that same feat over the weekend and will play at the same Resch Center Thursday evening. This is their second consecutive trip to state. Good luck to them too!

The Mineral Point boys became Regional Champions Saturday night and are the lone team in our coverage area reaching Sectionals. Good luck to them!
